Could There Be a ‘The Office’ Reboot?
The Office ended in 2013, but with the series available on Netflix, fans still can’t get enough of the signature quirky humor that was so special with the show. The topic of a potential reboot of the hit series has been on the radar since last December, with sources close to producers at NBC saying that the network was looking for a continuation from the final season of the show. It was rumored that the reboot would still take place at Dunder Mifflin in Scranton, PA, and would feature a mix of new and old cast members. Unfortunately, Steve Carell, famous for playing the oblivious regional manager Michael Scott, would be absent if a reboot took place.
In an interview, Steve Carell mentioned he was uninterested in shooting a reboot of The Office, saying “Nothing against any revivals that happen, but these are never the same. You never get the same kind of energy. It would have to be exactly the same as it was to work. And it never could be. So my inclination and I think the inclination of most people who had worked on it would be to just leave it the way it is, and not desecrate whatever it was. Because I think it was special, and everybody who was involved with it thought it was special.”
With the boss out, that still leaves many other well-loved characters available for a potential reboot. Rainn Wilson, who plays Dwight Schrute, has expressed his interest in getting the cast back together, but not for a brand new season. Wilson told Cinemablend “I think everyone feels the same way. If the timing is right, if the idea is right then we’d love to do something. I don’t wanna go do new Office episodes. Kinda like on Will & Grace, they’re just doing the show again. I don’t really have a desire to do that. But if there was some fun little arc where we get to revisit our characters in a given time, that could be a lot of fun.”
John Krasinski, who plays the character of Jim, voiced his concerns of not having received a call from NBC regarding him reprising his role in the show. In an interview with The Wrap, he said “I still have yet to be called. I am surprised that after ‘Ellen’ and all that — I haven’t gotten a call, so I haven’t heard anything about it, other than on the internet.”
Krasinski even pitched his own idea for the reboot – a Christmas reunion episode. He referenced the original British show that had a similar episode, saying it was “the best thing” about it. He continued on “I think it would be a sort of ‘Where Are They Now’ kind of thing. That would be really fun.”
While fans will always be hungry for my of The Office, a reunion episode could provide a satisfying conclusion to the lives of all of the characters. Plus, who doesn’t want to hear that marvelous, catchy theme-song one more time..
