Third Bridget Jones Movie in the Works

Ten years after the original film first charmed viewers with a quirky yet lovable Bridget Jones, as played by Renee Zellweger, it’s finally time to dust off that diary again.

After years of deliberation, Working Title Films, the same company that produced the original Bridget Jones’ Diary (2001) as well as its sequel (2004), is moving ahead with a third installment, confirms Entertainment Weekly.

No other details have yet been released, but last year, Bridget Jones costar Colin Firth, who plays her husband Mark Darcy, revealed some details about a possible plot, according to Access Hollywood.

“I can tell you that Bridget and Mark can’t have children, I think that’s the way it goes on,” Firth said. “So then she makes the huge mistake of going back to Daniel Cleaver [Hugh Grant’s character] for long enough to get pregnant. And I think he dumps her, and she’s left stranded, and guess who comes back to rescue her?”

The plot of the Bridget Jones movies are based on the novel of the same name, written by English writer Helen Fielding.  The story follows the life of a single thirty-something year old woman living in London who struggles with (often humorously) with her self, family, friends, and relationships.

According to the London Evening Standard, Fielding had begun writing the third installment of her best-selling books earlier this year.  At the time, she said there had been discussions about the third film.

“I will be working on both the book and the film but I don’t know if they are the same thing yet. It’s not been decided,” Fielding said.

The first film, released in 2001, grossed $281 million and quickly became an international hit.  Zellweger was nominated for an Academy Award for her role as Bridget Jones.  The 2004 sequel, The Edge of Reason, raked in $262 million worldwide, but received horrible reviews from both fans and critics.

Many fans are worried that the third film will only further disappointment appropriated from the second.  However, talks of Bridesmaids director Paul Feig to helm the film may give the third Bridget Jones installment a refreshing breath of charm.
