The Next Step for ABC: The Live Musical Business
If you’re a fan of musicals and all things disney, we have some good news for you. ABC has jut announced that they are getting into the musical industry for the 2017-18 season and they plan on going under the sea. To our excitement, the first musical ABC will start with is The Wonderful World of Disney: The Little Mermaid Live!
In the production, ABC is expected to bring to life the tale of Ariel and Eric we all know and love. Though the celebrities performing in the show are not yet revealed, we do know that the musical will be a two-hour event you don’t want to miss. With cutting-edge technological advancements and incredible live performances of Alan Menken and Howard Ashman’s Oscar-winning songs, what could possibly go wrong?
This is not the first broadcasting network to take on the live musical industry, considering NBC and FOX have already entered the live musical performance industry. NBC has already had one performance of Bye Bye Birdy this past December, which played in the Hollywood Bowl Arena and featured Jennifer Lopez. NBC also has plans in the future for an Easter Sunday performance of Jesus Christ Superstar in 2018. Furthermore, FOX has recently announced plans for A Christmas Story to play this holiday season, followed by their staging of Rent.
We are excited to see what celebrities will star in The Little Mermaid, and will be sure to keep you updated on the casting choices. We do know, on the other hand, that Done + Dusted is producing the special, with Hamish Hamilton, Ian Stewart, David Jammy, Katy Mullan and Richard Kraft of Kraft-Engel Productions executive producing.
