Another “Twilight” film? Lions Gate Executive Rob Friedman expresses his interest

By  |

Rob Friedman, former co-chairman of Summit now Executive at Lions Gate Entertainment, recently expressed enthusiasm in supporting a sixth installment to the megahit “Twilight” film franchise, should Stephanie Meyer decide to release a fifth novel to expand her international best-selling vampire saga. Why wouldn’t he? To date, the successful film series has earned over $2 billion dollars worldwide, and the final (for now) installment of the series, “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2,” is projected to add $700 million more at the box office.

Yes, this is indeed some news “Twi-Hards” around the world can really sink their teeth into, and may or may not be impetus for Meyer to revisit the idea of adding a fifth novel, a notion she’s been toying around with for a few years now. In 2008, the first twelve chapters of a potential addition to the series temporarily titled “Midnight Sun” was leaked on the internet, persuading the author to indefinitely cease production on her project.

“My first feeling was that there was no way to continue. Writing isn’t like math; in math, two plus two always equals four no matter what your mood is like. With writing, the way you feel changes everything… In any case, I feel too sad about what has happened to continue working on Midnight Sun, and so it is on hold indefinitely.” – Stephanie Meyer, StephenieMeyer.com August 28, 2008

Riding on the success of the “Twilight Saga” film series, Lions Gate recently acquired Summit in a deal worth over $400 million. As a result, the highly-anticipated trailer for “Breaking Dawn – Part 2” will make its debut with Lion Gate’s largest theatrical release to date, “The Hunger Games,” a film based on another successful young adult novel by author Suzanne Collins. The film is set to be released on March 23, 2012.

Despite mostly negative critic reviews, the “Twilight Saga” film series is without a doubt one of the greatest successes in box office history, smashing records with every successive release. While just the name Edward Cullen alone makes millions swoon, it also makes millions of others experience a gag reflex. While the now infamous “Twilight” series has caused a great divide among the international audience, it has also breathed new life in the vampire genre, much like Anne Rice did with “The Vampire Chronicles.”

While the fruition of a fifth novel and/or a sixth movie hangs in the balance, one puzzling, all-important question still remains:

Team Edward or Team Jacob?
