MoviePass Brings Back ‘Movie-A-Day’ Subscription
Thought the nail was in the coffin for MoviePass? Think again. The movie subscription service is proving to be incredibly resilient by announcing its revival of the popular $9.95 per month movie-a-day subscription plan. This same plan once won over millions of customers while causing the company to burn through hundreds of millions of dollars in cash to subsidize unlimited movies.
However, history won’t repeat itself this time, according to MoviePass, by calling this the “Uncapped” plan, a step-up from the previous plan they offered that only allowed moviegoers to see three movies a month.
CEO of MoviePass, Ted Farnsworth is sure they have cracked the formula for allowing their customers to enjoy subscriptions without too many stipulations. “We are — and have been — listening to our subscribers every day, and we understand that an uncapped subscription plan at the $9.95 price point is the most appealing option to our subscribers,” Farnsworth said in a statement.
“While we’ve had to modify our service a number of times in order to continue delivering a movie-going experience to our subscribers, with this new offering we are doing everything we can to bring people a version of the service that originally won their hearts,” he added.
One thing to note is that this “Uncapped” plan is only available at the $9.95 price point if subscribers pay for 12-months at a time. Otherwise, a month-to-month plan will run you $14.95. The $9.95 price is a limited time offer, as MoviePass plans to raise the price to $19.95 in the coming months.
Some other caveats include being restricted to see 2D movies “available in the app” according to the website. This may be troubling, as before, the company would only allow you to choose certain movies from a pre-selected list. There is also some unpromising fine print in the terms and conditions, saying “Your movie choices may be restricted due to excessive individual usage which negatively impacts system-wide capacity.” In other words, this is may not be a truly unlimited plan.
Nevertheless, it is another choice for avid moviegoers if they want to get their most bang for their buck. MoviePass is joined by competitors,
