Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise marriage broken over Scientology
Last week Katie Holmes filed her petition for divorce after five years of marriage to Tom Cruise. The couple started dating in 2005 when Holmes was 26 years old. A year later, the two stars had decided to tie the knot.
When Holmes was asked about her relationship with her husband, she replied, “He has been Tom Cruise for 30 years. I know who I am and where I am and where I want to go, so I want to focus on that.”
After five years of marriage, it was Holmes who decided to make her own strategic move, by filing for divorce in New York.
The petition was filed almost a week before Cruise’s birthday. Cruise was left alone July 3 instead of spending the special day with his family. The petition was a surprise to everyone, except for Katie. What is the reason for the divorce? Scientology.
For those who are curious about Scientology: it is a set of beliefs that offers followers a path to embracing their true immortal spirits. The religion was founded by L. Ron Hubbard in the 1950’s.
“It is a religion that offers a precise path leading to a complete and certain understanding of one’s true spiritual nature and one’s relationship to self, family, groups, Mankind, all life forms, the material universe, the spiritual universe and the Supreme Being.” (Scientology.org)
Holmes was a catholic before she converted to her husband’s faith of Scientology. However, the parents’ often clashed over their different viewpoints of child raising and family life. Where Cruise wanted their only daughter, Suri, to be raised in a structured Scientology lifestyle that allows the child to be “overindulged” and home-schooled, Holmes wanted more discipline and traditional schooling.
In addition to Holmes’s request for divorce, the actress is also requesting sole custody of Suri. A source told US Magazine, “She wants to be in charge of how Suri is being raised and didn’t want her to have an exclusively Scientology education.”
Since her file for divorce last week, Holmes has also made a few other changes in her life. Last Monday the actress had terminated her connection with her former publicist. Now free from her obligations to her husband, the actress can make her own decisions in the film industry and her life. For starts, the actress went back and re-signed the BWR Public Relations firm she was formerly with, before her marriage to Cruise.
“Sources told Us Magazine that Holmes is trying to get her career back on track as it had been heavily controlled by Cruise, who wouldn’t allow her to do films that included “sexually compromising scenes, largely because the Scientology folks objected.” (MTV)
Now that Holmes has shed everything of her past life with Cruise, Holmes can now focus on her future career. The question everyone will be wanting to know is, what movie will she choose as her first post-break up role?
