Tips to Help You Save at the Gas Pump

Gas prices are absolutely ridiculous nowadays, with Americans spending a record amount of money each time they fill up their vehicles. If you’re anything like me, you cringe a little every time you look at the total amount after a trip to the gas station. Luckily, there are some tips you can use to help you boost your car’s fuel efficiency, saving yourself money and a bit of your sanity. 

Slow down and drive steady 

Driving fast can be fun, but spending a ton of money on gas sure isn’t. Cut back on your joy rides by focusing on driving the speed limit and driving smoothly to improve your gas efficiency.

Monitor your brake usage 

Constantly braking can result in wasted gas and cause your brake pads to quickly wear out. Be conscious of how you use your brakes, especially while in heavy traffic. 

Skip the gas stations near the highway 

These gas stations are notorious for jacking up their prices, so it’s best to avoid them. Try going to a nearby location further from any highway exits or onramps. 

Eliminate wind resistance 

Driving with the windows down can be nice, especially during the warmer months, but doing so causing unnecessary wind resistance which can negatively affect your gas efficiency. This also goes for any unneeded bike racks or carries. 

Don’t wait to fill up your tank 

Waiting until your tank is empty is not the best thing to do if you’re trying to improve gas efficiency. By filling up at a quarter of a tank, you can have the luxury of choosing where you fill up so you can find the best price possible. 

Check your tire pressure 

Driving with under-inflated tires can cause tires to wear out faster, leaving you burning more fuel to get your car moving. Be sure to check your tire pressure every week or so. 

Know when to use the A/C

Running your air conditioner while city driving or stop-and-go traffic can impact your gas mileage. Try limiting your use of the A/C only while you’re driving on the highway. 

Use the correct motor oil 

Not using the proper motor oil can cause your engine to have to work harder and waste gas. If you do your own oil changes, make sure you’re using the optimal type of oil.
