Should You Buy The iPhone X?
On the 10th anniversary of the introduction of the original iPhone, Apple announced a whole slew of new devices at their annual Keynote presentation. The new lineup of devices include a 4th generation Apple Watch, the 4K Apple TV, the iPhone 8 and 8+, and the new flagship iPhone model, the iPhone X. Meant to be called “iPhone 10” due to the number of years the iPhone has been around, this phone brings exciting new features and a fresh form factor unlike any other previous iPhones. Once it was announced, countless Apple enthusiasts took to the internet to answer the burning question of: Should I buy it? With a price tag starting at $999 for the 64GB version and moving all the way up to $1,149 for the 256GB version, it is imperative to research whether it is worth spending your money.
At first glance of the iPhone X, the first thing you’ll notice is the incredible edge-to-edge display that takes up the entire front of the phone. Gone are the bezels on the side, bottom, and top, giving the user a total of 5.8 inches of usable screen space. This is the largest size iPhone screen to date, even topping the iPhone 8+ screen which comes in at 5.5 inches. What’s unique about this is that the iPhone X is actually smaller than the 8+ due to the lack of bezels. The OLED screen will be the highest resolution iPhone screen ever, bringing stunning colors and striking depth to the user. For those wondering where the home button is, Apple has replaced TouchID with FaceID, a new way to unlock your phone using just your face. A powerful front camera array will scan your face, and allow you to unlock your phone with just a glance.
iPhone’s are known for their powerful photo taking capabilities, and the iPhone X is taking that even further with a faster and more powerful 12 megapixel dual camera on the back. The dual lenses will also allow telephoto optical zoom, meaning you can get that perfect shot from further away without sacrificing photo quality. The brand new A11 Bionic processing chip will power the phone, resulting in a extremely quick and fluid user experience. Game lovers will enjoy playing augmented reality games, which will utilize the fast processor to project digital games onto real life environments. If you’re worried about the battery life, Apple reports that it will last 2 hours longer than the iPhone 7. To make charging your phone even easier, the iPhone X supports wireless charging, by simply placing it on a charging mat.
All of these features sound incredible and revolutionary for an iPhone, but are they worth the sky-high price tag? That question depends on the current phone you have and what you look for in a phone. If you are currently using an iPhone 6S/6/5S/5, it might be worth it to upgrade to the iPhone X. Those phones are beginning to become slower with new software updates, and upgrading to the iPhone X will future proof your phone for years to come. For those with an iPhone 7/7+, upgrading to the X depends on if you want the new screen, FaceID, better camera, and faster processor. The 7/7+ will continue to be superb phones, and will suit your needs just fine, so I recommend you stick with them until the next update to the iPhone lineup.
The iPhone X is available for pre-order on October 27th, and will start shipping out on November 3rd. For those who don’t want to shell out over $1,000 for a phone, Apple offers a payment plan that allows you to pay off your iPhone X in installments of $49.91 for the 64GB and $55.16 for the 256GB.
