Financial Tip of the Week: Managing Your Financial Health
San Diego Entertainer’s own financial expert, Steve Sexton, provides the Channel 6 San Diego Living show with financial tips throughout the month. We are thankful to be able to share his financial expertise with our readers as well.
Today’s topic – taxes. We either dread this time of the year or enthusiastically file our taxes in hopes of a generous tax return, or just a tax return for that matter. Whichever side you are on it is important to review your taxes early to eliminate any unpleasant surprises. Most people wait until it is too late in the year to really manage their financial health when it comes to taxes, when in fact the best time to check up on your tax situation are during the last two months (November & December) of the year.
When that time approaches, it is critical to meet with your CPA and Financial Advisor to review key issues. All situations vary, as we all do not invest in the same thing. For those who invest in real estate, deductions may vary. If you invest in stocks and mutual funds, you need to review your losses and gains, and discuss strategies to address possible taxes. For business owners, make sure to create a complete list of questions to ask your CPA and Financial Advisor, questions such as: what is the projected profit? I have yearly bonuses, is 12/31 or 1/01 better? Whatever it is you invest in make sure you ask the right questions.
