Giving back to the community with Don Meredith and Steve Sexton

Financial adviser Steve Sexton, President of Sexton Advisory Group, hosts a radio show each week called “Winning In Life.” Steve is well-known for his involvement in local charities around Southern California and through his show, he provides listeners with expert advice in all areas of financial planning. Along with financial advice, Steve invites guest speakers to the show to talk about other important life topics such as health, charity, travel, and much more. This week, Steve invited a special guest, Don Meredith, a mentor for  Just in Time for Foster Youth and author of the book “The Grand Delusion.”

Just in Time for Foster Youth was established for emancipated youth. It is a basic needs program for transitioning young adults. The program assists hundreds of youth entering college every year. Don describes his role in the program and talks about how rewarding his experience has been working with Just in Time.

Don created a car class for these foster kids, but the class isn’t really about cars. The class talks about how to buy a car, how to survive in a break shop, and how not to be a victim. But it isn’t only about buying a car, it’s also about having heart to hearts with the kids and learning about how they feel and what’s bothering them. He explained that these kids have never had conversations about buying a car with their parents. They are appreciative of every piece of advice they get. Both Steve and Don remind the audience of the importance of charitable giving and how you have the ability to change someone’s life.

Don also used to work for a large firm, but he made a the decision to go work for a smaller one instead. He is only interested in income investment and really only likes to invest in things that generate income. Oil and gas, for example, used to be a very risky investment. However, today, oil and gas has become consistent in generating significant income. You also get significant tax reductions. At the end of the show, Don gives us an overview of his new book, “The Grand Delusion.” This book basically talks about how investing turns into gambling. He interviewed different investors and traders and examined their behavior. He reveals things about investment behavior that people don’t really talk about.
