Fun at the Fleet Science Center
The Fleet Science Center, located in Balboa Park, brings interactive exhibits, IMAX films, special events and more to San Diegans and tourists alike. With their wide array of programming, The Fleet is a great place for kids and adults alike. If you head to The Fleet this holiday season, you should also check out their selection of unique educational toys and games, books, IMAX DVDs and more.
This December, there are a number of great exhibits to visit. These events and exhibits are a great way to get the kids out of the house. The Fleet is also the perfect destination for those periodic rainy-days that grace our San Diego skies.
IMAX films
With several theaters available for IMAX films, you will be fully immursed into the worlds explored in each of these great documentaries.
Extreme Weather
National Geographic’s Extreme Weather takes us to the edge of 300-foot tall glaciers collapsing, to the front lines of massive wildfires and directly in the path of deadly tornadoes. The film follows the paths of two researchers and a team of fire fighters as they attempt to sort out and combat problems associated with climate change. Extreme Weather is directed and filmed by Sean Casey, star of Discovery Channel’s hit television series Storm Chasers and the director of the IMAX film Tornado Alley. Extreme Weather showcases breathtaking cinematography, reflecting Casey’s lifelong immersion in the world of giant-screen nature documentaries.

National Parks Adventure
The giant screen film National Parks Adventure takes audiences on the ultimate off-trail adventure into the nation’s awe-inspiring great outdoors and untamed wilderness. Filmed in more than 30 national parks across the country, this immersive film for IMAX® theaters follows world-class mountaineer Conrad Anker, adventure photographer Max Lowe and artist Rachel Pohl as they hike, climb and explore their way across America’s spectacularly wild and beautiful places.

Visiting Exhibitions
Visiting Exhibitions include Fit-a-Brick Build Zone and Retro-Active Science which are both interative and teach science and engineering principles. The Art of the Brick is a great addition and is great for kids and adults. This exhibit was named one of CNN’s Top Ten “Global Must-See Exhibitions.” See this collection of inspiring artworks made exclusively from LEGO bricks.
Permanent Exhibitions
Eight permanent interactive exhibitions teach kids about the human body, the environment, space, and so much more.
Block Busters! Become an architect and build structures that impress.
Cellular Journey. Learn about cells in the human body, stem cells, and how research is done.
Kid City. Kids under 5 will love this interactive learning environment.
Nano. Learn about what you can see – from magnetism to static electricity and gravity.
Power Play San Diego. Created in partnership with SDG&E, learn how the San Diego power grid works, where the energy comes from and how it gets into our homes.
San Diego’s Water. Find out where our water comes from and learn about conservation.
So Watt! Learn about different forms of energy generation including solar panels. Kids will learn what they can do to conserve energy.
Tinkering Studio. Explore a full spectrum of STEAM activities: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. Guests of all ages will enjoy this exhibit. Please note this exhibit will not be open on Christmas Day.
Other Events
Ongoing events include a once-a-month astronomy presentation, pre-school and childrens programs, winter camps, autism-friendly programming, events for seniors and much more.
