This Weekend in SD: Comedy, Graffiti and Owls

This weekend, live it up with fun events involving comedy, graffiti, owls and more. Adventure seekers can laugh at Friday Night Comedy, dance at Free Dance Fridays or learn about urban art with the Artrageous Urban Art Event. Those looking for a calmer weekend can look for owls during the Owl Prowls or celebrate everything Finland with FinnFest 2011.

Artrageous Urban Art Event

This Saturday check out the first of four Artrageous Urban Art Events hosted by Aaron Brothers from 1–5 p.m. Artrageous will be a unique glimpse into the little known artistic underground of graffiti with celebrity urban artist appearances, live mural paintings, autograph signings, hands-on demos and free urban art supplies giveaways. The graffiti mural panels painted by the artists will be auctioned off online at the conclusion of the events. Net proceeds will be donated to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, an organization that offers programs and services that promote and enhance the development of youth. Representatives and members from the San Diego Boys and Girls Club chapter will accept a special donation check.

Friday Night Comedy

It’s Christmas morning and you just found out your dad hooked up with your girlfriend. What do you do? Friday Night Comedy at Roar Theater examines intense situations just like this every Friday night. “No morals, no etiquette, no safe and boring. We simply play out these situations as human animals; reacting in the moment with hilarious outcomes,” the theater’s website says. “We perform improvised and sketch comedy created on the spot from audience suggestions. For anyone who likes to laugh, party, and rule the world.” The show performs at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. for those ages 18 and older. Tickets are $8.

Owl Prowl

Enjoy a quiet evening’s search for owls with Birder and Trail Guide Jeanne Raimond, who willprovide insight into the habits of these clever and well-adapted night hunters. The hikers also seek poorwills, bats and other nighttime flyers. The event will be held this Friday from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at Mission Trails Regional Park. The event is free and for adults only. Those wishing to attend should meet at the dirt parking lot on the corner of Bushy Hill Drive and FJST, across from the Kumeyaay Lake Campground, Two Father Junipero Serra Trail (Santee).

Free Dance Fridays

This weekend, participate in Free Dance Fridays, where anyone can learn to dance for free. The Academy of World Dance n Arts offers a free introductory class to Swing, Salsa & Ballroom dancing every Friday night from 7-8 p.m. year round, in addition to the many other classes for all ages. These free classes are for ages teen to adults and no previous experience is needed. Those interested can call 858-679-8277 or visit the website.

FinnFest 2011

It’s the Month of Finland in San Diego, and that means the 28th annual FinnFest. FinnFest USA will once again celebrate Finnish-American heritage in San Diego with five full days of cultural immersion. The annual festival will commence with opening ceremonies at the Town & Country Resort Hotel in Mission Valley on Wednesday, Aug. 10 at 4 p.m. and last until Sunday with events spanning the spectrum of entertainment, cultural, educational, sport, family-focused and business programs. Thousands of North American, local and international visitors are expected to attend the events and browse the Tori Marketplace brimming with Finnish products. A 5-day pass costs $99 for adults, $89 for seniors and $59 for kids. Single day tickets are $25 for adults and seniors and $20 for kids. Ages 10 and under are free.
