Twilight Concerts at Balboa Park
Balboa Park is one of our cities finest gems. The Spanish architecture is breathtaking, its museums are always hosting exciting exhibits, and the whole park is historic and iconic. Throughout the year, Balboa Park is home to tons of events that are free to the public, and if you ask a local, these events one of the most charming parts of living here in San Diego.
Every season has its own special event at Balboa Park that draws a large crowd. San Diego residents and tourists alike flock to Balboa Park to attend these events because we all know that they will be unique and beautiful. During the holiday season, thousands of people walk the grounds of Balboa Park during December Nights when vendors and decorations are set up to celebrate the season. But the most time honored tradition at Balboa Park is the Twilight Concerts in the Park. These concerts are a quintessential summer event in San Diego and a great family friendly way to enjoy the iconic park. The Twilight Concerts highlight the best parts of living here in San Diego: the warm summer nights and the beauty of community.
During the summer, crowds gather at the Spreckle’s Organ Pavilion to hear musicians from all over the world perform on the beautiful stage while the sun sets over Balboa Park. The experience is nothing less than magical. There’s nothing like a well orchestrated, free event in a community of friendly strangers to make you appreciate your city.
For 36 years, Twilight’s live music under the stars has been delighting visitors. The music program ranges from military bands and Dixieland jazz, to big band swing and Latin salsa. This summer, a few tribute bands will also take the stage: Santana Ways (Santana covers), Suspicious Minds (Elvis Presley covers), and a Supremes tribute band. Concerts run from June 20 through August 31 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. For the complete concert schedule, click here.
Special theme-events on certain evenings will begin at 5:30 p.m. on the stage of the majestic Spreckels Organ Pavilion. These themed events include free swing dance lessons from Swing Dance San Diego to compliment jazz and swing music on July 5 & 12, August 8, 24, & 30. There will also be a free ice cream social on August 24. Arrive early and make sure to get some ice cream while it lasts!
There are a lot of ways to enjoy the Twilight Concerts. Pack up a picnic, bring the pup, or take a brisk jog through Balboa Park and use the concert as a nice reward at the end. Or you can always just sit back and relax while you listen to some wonderful tunes in good company.
