This Weekend in San Diego 8/11-8/13
Whether you had a rough week and you want to unwind, or you had a great week and you want to celebrate, there are a lot of fun events in San Diego that’ll make the task seem easy. Friday through Sunday will be filled with good food, lots of art, a few festivals, and some outdoor fun. Have a look at what’s in store:
Friday, August 11th
Have you been wanting to get outside and explore more with your pup? Now is a perfect time! Learn how to stand-up paddle board with your dog during a lesson with SUP Pups! The lesson starts with the basics and safety of SUP while putting your dog on the board. The hour-long tour takes you under the North Harbor Bridge near the Navy Dolphin Training Facility where you can see the dolphins as well as other sites of San Diego. Sign up here. Balboa Park After Dark: On Fridays all throughout summer, eight Balboa Park museums will be open late, and a rotating selection of food trucks will be parked on the Plaza de Panama and Prado walkways for Balboa Park Conservancy’s Food Truck Friday. The program is designed for those who are unable to visit the park during the day. Stop by and enjoy one of San Diego’s most iconic locations with a late night stroll!
The seventh-annual Oceanside International Film Festival is an opportunity for independent filmmakers local and abroad to screen their work in a Southern California locale. Over the course of eight days, OIFF 2017 will host over 70 films. This Friday, the event is scheduled from 6-10pm.
Saturday, August 12th
Tiki Oasis comes to San Diego once a year and it is the largest, longest-running festival in the world for lovers of Island lifestyle and purveyors of Polynesian Pop. Stop by to see the Tiki Art Show, with everything from carvings to oil paintings to ceramics to bring tiki to life. You’ll also have a great time checking out the Tiki Marketplace and Car Show. The marketplace features over 100 vendors with carvings, furniture, and tiki-themed pet products, with many of the items created especially for the event. At the car show fans of Polynesian Pop can enjoy all aspects of mid-century culture (especially vintage cars) along with vendors, food trucks, and live music.
The ArtWalk at Liberty Station will host 200 international, national, and local San Diego artists with paintings, sculpture, glass work, fine jewelry, and photography as well as live music, a KidsWalk (interactive art for the kids), street-food options, and a wine and beer pavilion. There’s plenty of easy, free parking at Liberty Station, so there’s no excuse to miss the party!
Sunday, August 13th
Craft Your Own Adventure Brew Day. Enjoy a day of beer and brewing, and learn about the brewing process from a professional brewer. Once you’ve successfully brewed your own beer, bring your friends out and show off your creation. The event is from 11am-3pm and is hosted by Kuracali in San Marcos
Have you been wanting to hone your skills in the kitchen? The Thai at Home class at Sur la Table in Carlsbad awaits. Learn secrets for combining aromatic herbs and spices with seasonal ingredients to create the flavors that make Thai cuisine uniquely delicious. Your instructor will walk you through techniques for everything from marinating and grilling to stir frying like a pro. You’ll learn some tasty secrets for creating a creamy peanut sauce and the instructor will show you how to prepare the perfect Pad Thai. Class starts at 2pm.
If you want to let loose and sing your heart out to close out the weekend, stop by Sunday Funday Karaoke at 710 Beach Club in PB.
