Rancho Bernardo Inn Golf Course – A Golfers Review

By  |

The RB Inn has all the features of a great golf course. There are restrooms out on the course, plentiful water jugs (with lemon wheels for flavor) and staff to take your golf bags to your cart. The food at the RB Inn is fantastic. The breakfast burrito and The Chicago Dog were my favorites. There is a great restaurant right on the golf course and a bar inside for an post-round beverage.

In addition to all of that, the Rancho Bernardo Inn offers some great Stay & Play packages that you can find out about on their website. The RB Inn will also host your golf tournaments or group meetings and is a beautiful place for your wedding.

Difficulty: 3.5* Rancho Bernardo Inn is a really fun and surprisingly forgiving golf course–if you play from the white tees. At 5845 yards from the whites it’s a standard length golf course. But if you head back to the black or blues it will change the course dramatically.

Staff: The staff at the Rancho Bernardo Inn is extremely courteous and helpful. Around the clubhouse it seemed like there was always someone nearby to answer questions, help me with my clubs or chat with. The starter gave me a great piece of advice at the first tee. He said, “Lay up on 18.”

Course Condition: The course is in great shape. The greens were well-maintained, lush and very fair—even a couple that were under construction.  The fairways were trimmed and ready to reward those tee shots that found their mark.

Tips/Advice:

Hole 5 (pictured below) offers an uphill tee shot. The two fairway bunkers are positioned to swallow up a short sliced or hooked tee shot. There are matching bunkers down the fairway as well that aren’t visible from the tee box. Even a short, straight drive is better here because at 356 yards the hole is an average length par 4. The gains from hitting a 250 yard drive may not be worth the risk of landing in those traps.

Hole 7 (pictured below) is the hardest hole on the course because it is a long par 4. You can see the fairway creeping away to the left. A good drive should go over the left bunkers. From there you’ll have to use a good long iron or pull out the fairway metal.

Hole 13 is a 100-yard par 3 that is just plain fun. It’s a short chip shot but a great hole for any golfers out there with a penchant for gambling. But mind the wind here. The high shots can get tangled up in the air and pulled to the left.

One of my favorite holes is 16. On most days the wind will be at your back on this elevated tee box. For heavy hitters a 300+ yard drive would not be unexpected. Left of middle is the suggested flight path for this shot.

Conclusion:

The Rancho Bernardo Inn is great golf course and promises to be enormous fun for golfers of all skill levels. The twilight rates make this an affordable course for any price range.
