Philanthro San Diego Partners with San Diego River Foundation for ‘Engage’ on July 28

By  |

Philanthro, a nonprofit comprised of young professionals focused on creating opportunities for peers to give back, will host its second annual national volunteer day, Engage, on July 28. The event is a great way for San Diegans young and old to support the community with a hands on project in the beautiful San Diego sun.

This year, the San Diego chapter has partnered with the San Diego River Park Foundation to save and restore one of the last remaining coastal dune and wetland habitats in San Diego.

The parks, river and beach ecosystem is a defining characteristic of San Diego. Due to urbanization and pollution, very few wetland habitats remain. San Diego has actually lost over 95 percent of its wetlands due to development. Engage participants will help the San Diego River Park Foundation preserve the natural habitats that are central to the San Diego community by pulling light weeds and picking up trash. Other Philanthro chapters in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Seattle will also be hosting environment-related events on the same day, spreading the spirit of supporting their own cities.

In 2011, Philanthro San Diego worked with Community Coaching Center to clear Crown Point beach of litter.

“As young professionals ourselves, we understand the importance of having access to opportunities to give back that go beyond fundraising,” said national CEO of Philanthro, Andrew Whelan. “Young people want to participate in philanthropy and we pride ourselves in creating various activities that allow others to contribute in different forms. By partnering with great local environmental causes, we are able to connect with our cities, other nonprofits and one another.”

In addition to Engage, Philanthro San Diego hosts fundraising and volunteer events year-round. Philanthro also throws an annual national benefit event, in which all five chapters host parties for one nonprofit in order create one night in five cities with one huge impact. This year’s all-city benefit is scheduled for Dec. 1. Completely volunteer-run, Philanthro is always looking for new members for its programs. Philanthro offers opportunities in event planning, development, marketing, finance and more in efforts to provide access to philanthropy and to create awareness for worthwhile causes. San Diego resident for over 10 years, I now call this beautiful city home. Originally from the Bay Area, I'm a California girl at heart. I love the outdoors, fitness, food, and a good craft beer (from San Diego of course).
