“Pedal the Cause” Cancer Fundraiser to start in San Diego
A major bicycle riding event to raise money for the fight against cancer is coming to San Diego in October, 2013. Pedal the Cause is the name of both the ride and the organization putting it all together.
Patrick Connor is the Executive Director of Pedal the Cause. He said, “There’ll be a one-day course of 25 miles and 50 miles, and there’ll be an epic weekend course.” The weekend ride will begin and conclude at the UC San Diego campus. Participants will pedal all the way to Julian. There will be accommodations for the riders to sleep over night there on Saturday. On Sunday, everyone will return to La Jolla.
There will be also be celebrity riders pedaling for the cause. Two who have registered already are the always amazing Cookie “Chainsaw” Randolph from the Dave Shelly & Chainsaw Show, a San Diego institution, and well-known radio host Mike Slater.
Three San Diego cancer research institutions, the Salk Institute, the Sanford-Burnham Institute and the UCSD Moores Cancer Center will receive 100% of the proceeds raised by the bike ride event.
Those who sign up for Pedal the Cause by this Wednesday, June 5, 2013 will receive a discount on the minimum fundraising amount required to register. To register go to Pedal the Cause Registration.
The mission of San Diego Pedal the Cause is to raise funds and donate them to the three research centers here that the National Cancer Institute has designated as cancer centers. These facilities will receive all of the funds raised during this year’s and subsequent events in San Diego.
In 2009, Bill Koman, who had survived lymphoma twice, founded Pedal the Cause. He wanted to express his gratitude to the Siteman Cancer Center in St. Louis, which was where he was treated and made his recoveries. Koman hoped that by funding further research and care, others could survive as he had. To view a video promoting the event click here.
