Things to Do on Memorial Day
Memorial Day is a time to honor fallen soldiers and it is also the unofficial start of summer. Whether you want to participate in memorial services, entertainment events, or club crawls, San Diego has something for everyone.
Wreath Ceremony and Concert on U.S.S. Midway
Enjoy a free, family-friendly event honoring the “Greatest Generation,” with a flyover, veteran speaker and biodegradable commemorative wreathes. This event is a wonderful way to inspire patriotism and appreciate for those who serve in our military. The wreath ceremony will begin at 9 am. Also aboard the U.S.S. Midway on Memorial Day is the 7th annual Freedom Concert featuring multi-platinum alt-rock band Lifehouse. The concert starts at 7:30 pm and all who attend will have an epic view of the sunset and and the San Diego bay. Proceeds from the event will be donated to three military-centered beneficiaries: STEP (Support The Enlisted Project), United Through Reading, and the Navy SEAL Foundation. Tickets available here.

Service at Greenwood Memorial Park
Greenwood Memorial Park in San Diego is the final resting home for thousands of U.S. veterans. This year, the park will host its 96th annual Memorial Day Service. The American Legion-Post 6 of San Diego leads this year’s ceremony that honors and memorializes the lives of veterans. Lt. Kevin L. Johnson, Chaplin Corps of the United States Navy will address guests in memory of loved ones who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. The ceremony includes a wreath presentation, singing of the national anthem, readings of Logan’s General Order, Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, Lincoln’s condolence letter to Mrs. Lydia Bixby, and a Taps buglers performance. Hot dogs will be served. The event begins at 1:30 pm.

Memorial Day Service at Star Park in Coronado
The Coronado community has long been influenced by the military. Many gather at Star Park every year to support this annual event and pay homage to those who served and sacrificed their lives for their country. The Coronado Memorial Day ceremony grows each year. Last year, people overflowed into the street as the park filled up with active and retired military, veterans, police and firefighters, politicians, grandparents and children. The service will include a Presentation of Colors, keynote speakers, Taps, and singing of the National Anthem. Representatives from all branches of the military will be present. The service will begin at 10 am.

The Local’s Sing Dance Crawl
If you’re looking for more of a celebratory, upbeat time, then check out Sing Dance Crawl. This high-energy event draped in ‘Merican pride takes you to three of San Diego’s best venues: The House of Blues, Parq and Fluxx. The event starts at 12pm on the 27th. The three venues are open just for daytime event, but with the atmosphere and experience you would expect on a busy Saturday night. This party only happens once a year, and there will only be 1,500 tickets available. Purchase yours here!
