Dance Lessons: Bollywood by the Sea
The Headquarters at Seaport is famous for its eclectic blend of classically inspired architectural styles and its rich history. The iconic former headquarters to the San Diego Police Department is now Seaport District’s most enticing retail destination. The artfully designed open-air lifestyle center is home to an exclusive collection of specialty shops and world class restaurants catering to San Diego’s most discerning residents and visitors. The Headquarters has been giving new life to this historic waterfront region with the promise of a renaissance of style and a resurgence of youthful energy.
Not only is this a great shopping and dining destination for San Deigns and tourists alike, it is also home to a lot of great events. Summer nights on the courtyard are beautiful and hosting events here seems obvious— the market lights illuminate the area just enough to appreciate the architecture and the palm trees swaying in the breeze.
One of our favorite events at The Headquarters is Bollywood Dancing by the Sea. On Friday July 28th from 6-9pm, the space will turn into a dance floor and guests will enjoy Bollywood performances, dance lessons and music the center courtyard. The event will be led by SD Bollywood Steps. Bollywood Steps is a local dance company that aims to be a platform for spreading cultural awareness and bringing the multifaceted style of Bollywood dancing to San Diego.
What exactly is Bollywood dancing? Bollywood Dancing is a fusion of various dance styles encompassing western and eastern dance elements. It’s a melting pot of Indian dances like Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kathakali, Kuchupudi, Odissi, Folk, western dances like Salsa, Hip Hop, Ballet and various fitness dances like Zumba. This dance style teaches you self expression, discipline, grace and most of all makes you more flexible.
But if you’re a beginner, don’t be intimidated! The instructors at Bollywood Steps make you feel comfortable and right at home. And the guests during Bollywood Dancing by the Sea will be welcoming and helpful! This free event is open to all ages and skill levels, so don’t be nervous.
There are a lot of reasons to step out of your comfort zone and head out on the dance floor. Dancing has many health benefits, including weight loss, improvement of memory, and stress reduction. Dancing also improves your flexibility and reduces stiffness, improves your heart health, increases your energy level, and gives you better balance.
