At Village Pizzeria, it is all about the pie – pizza pie that is. A pizza is only as good as its crust and this pizzeria prides itself on making all their dough in-house with bottled water from New York. The dough is then made into your preferred style: Original New York Style Crust, Thin Crust or Sicilian Crust. After the dough, comes the sauce.
Red pies offer a tasty traditional tomato based sauce while the white pies offer a garlic olive oil base. Specialty pies are made with creamy pesto sauce, balsamic vinaigrette or even BBQ sauce. Topping choices are plentiful. In addition to your standard options, you’ll find such tempting delights as eggplant, banana peppers, Gorgonzola, Danish bleu cheese and chicken apple sausage.
The delicious calzones deserve their own recognition. Each generously portioned calzone is stuffed with a layer of ricotta cheese, mozzarella cheese and your toppings of choice. Then the thin crust is brushed with olive oil, dusted with oregano and baked to perfection.
The menu goes beyond pizza and offers appetizers, salads, traditional pasta dishes and Italian sandwiches known as hoagies and heroes. The smell of garlic is ever present as heaping piles of garlic fries, garlic bread and garlic knots are delivered to tables throughout the dining room. Garlic Knots, a Village Pizzeria specialty, are bite-sized dough that are baked and seasoned Italian style.
In addition to the bayside location at the Coronado Ferry Landing, Village Pizzeria – The Original can also be found on Orange Avenue in Coronado.
Another notable eatery at the Ferry Landing is Lil’ Piggy’s Bar-B-Q. Known for their Memphis Style BBQ, the menu serves up a tasty assortment of southern specialties, which are all the result of the travels of the Spatafore family as they searched the South for the best barbeque.
All the meats at Lil’ Piggy’s are cooked “low and slow” which means smoked for hours at low temperatures in their state of the art smoker. Pure hickory wood is used during the cooking process, which further enhances the flavor of the meats. The redness in the meat is a sign of flavor penetration referred to as the “smoke ring.”
In this BBQ house all the rubs and sauces are made on site. Traditional BBQ sauce is offered as well as a smoked pepper BBQ sauce that is hot and spicy. Mouthwatering baby back ribs are offered wet or dry. Additional meat offerings include pulled pork, smoked chicken, beef brisket and smoked and grilled sausage.
A notable find on the Spatafore family travels are the Memphis Nachos. This nacho plate offers tortilla chips smothered in queso sauce then topped with diced tomatoes, jalapenos and green onions. The next layer is a drizzling of sour cream and BBQ sauce. Then the whole thing is piled high with either pulled pork or chicken. These nachos are listed as a starter but could definitely be a meal.
Additional specialties include the Lil’ Sliders, the Texas Potato and the Corn Fritters. Piggy Sam’iches, Piggy Plates and Combo Plates round out the menu. Of course a barbeque meal wouldn’t be complete without all those tempting sides that we have all come to expect. Fresh Corn on the Cob, Baked Beans, Mac and Cheese and Coleslaw are all offered as well as Po’ Tater Salad and Pig Tails, more commonly known as seasoned curly fries.
As they like to say at Lil’ Piggy’s, “Bar-b-q is a technique not a sauce – the sauce has to compliment the technique.” At Lil’ Piggy’s, that technique has been perfected.
