The Historic Coronado Boathouse 1887

By  |

The Coronado Boathouse is one of Coronado’s most recognizable architectural landmarks, and is definitely a place to stop if you are looking for the best steak and seafood on the Island. In addition to their nightly menu and traditional offerings, the Boathouse is now serving up more than their traditional fare.

Originally built in 1887, The Boathouse structure is remarkably similar to that of another local landmark, and for good reason. The Coronado Boathouse was used as practice for the less-than professional crew that was to build the Hotel Del Coronado.

The Boathouse has been home to many great ventures in its 183 year life span. In 1903, it became the home base of William E. Ritter’s marine research. Ritter went on to found the Scripps Institute of Oceanography. In 1912, the Coronado Yacht Club established its first headquarters at the Boathouse, followed by the San Diego Yacht Club in 1920.

In 1973 the Boat House was recognized as a Coronado Historical Landmark and has remained a testimony to San Diego’s heritage. Locally-owned and operated, the Boathouse has established itself as one of San Diego’s favorite steak and seafood restaurants. It is enjoyed by residents of Coronado, San Diego, as well as tourists from all over the world.
