Celebrate National Pizza Day with San Diego Favorites

By  |

February 9th marks the celebration of National Pizza Day! There are over 1,200 national days celebrated throughout the year, and this month includes National Frozen Yogurt Day (February 6th), National Fettucini Alfredo Day (February 7th), National Do A Grouch A Favor Day (February 16th), and so many more. But today we wanted to focus on one of America’s favorites–pizza!

Over 23 pounds of pizza is consumed per person, per year in America. What can I say? We started liking bread and cheese as soon as we came out of the womb. So why not give our bodies what it’s always craving and celebrate National Pizza Day?

San Diego’s favorite pizzerias:

Pizza Port

Known not only for its remarkable beer, but also for its incredible pizza flavors. For the pesto lover, the Pizza Carlsbad is top notch. Pesto, mesquite grilled chicken, sundried tomatoes, artichoke hearts, and feta cheese. Pair it with their grog of the day, and let this holiday be a new holiday favorite for you and your group of friends. Find a Pizza Port in Solana Beach, Carlsbad, San Clemente, and Ocean Beach.

Bronx Pizza

If you are looking for a New York-style pizza, Bronx claims to be “just like home.” Whether you are looking for a single slice or a full-sized pie, Bronx has you covered. They are a cash only joint, so be prepared to bring your dollars, but you won’t need too many. You might consider ubering, since parking is limited at this Hillcrest location.

Cucina Urbana

Located in San Diego’s Bankers Hill, this California-inspired Italian kitchen and wine shopped opened in 2009. During their Intermezzo Happy Hour, get a taste of one of their specialty pizza for a fraction of the cost. Spinach and bacon with delicata squash, pear and gorgonzola with aged balsamic, spicy coppa and pineapple — each of these pizzas are available for $15-17 each. Turn National Pizza Day into a date night and enjoy one of these premium pizzas with a loved one.

Pizzeria Luigi

With three locations, North Park, Imperial Beach and Golden Hill, this pizzeria has developed a serious following over the years. Featured on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives in 2008, business has not been better for this local favorite. With creative pizza names like the Crime Scene (sausage, ricotta and globs of sauce), Fresh Prince (spinach, tomato, mushroom, onion, artichoke, garlic and marinara), and the White Girl (chicken, bacon and spicy ranch), your palate will be pleased from start to finish. The crust is crispy and chewy. Eat like a San Diegan or fold the slice in half for a true taste of the New York style.

Or, if you’re feeling creative, try crafting a couple unique pies yourself! For the bold chef’s, take on the challenge of making your own dough from scratch. Bobby Flay whipped up a recipe for a tasty dough with only few ingredients. Try the recipe, and make sure to leave plenty of time for the dough to rise.

Grab a fresh basil plant at your local farmer’s market this week and make this incredible homemade basil pesto, a great topping for your own version of Pizza Port’s Carlsbad

Got kiddos? Let them join in on the fun! Create a do-it-yourself pizza night, where your kids can choose from a handful of ingredients to make their own masterpiece.

From our familia to yours, Bon Apetit!
