Popeyes Releases Wildly Popular Sandwich, but Promptly Sells Out Nationwide
You may have seen the pandemonium across social media surrounding the buzz of the release of Popeyes new chicken sandwich. The sandwich went on sale on August 12 prompting a strong buzz of fans who scrambled to their nearest Popeyes to try one out for themselves. Most, if not all, were met with long lines and the eventual ultimate bummer: a sold-out sign.
“The demand for the new chicken sandwich in the first few weeks following launch far exceeded our very optimistic expectations. In fact, Popeyes aggressively forecasted demand through the end of September and has already sold through that inventory,” the chain said in a prepared statement.
This, of course, caused a flurry of activity on social media, with people absolutely dumbfounded that a national fast-food chain could run out of food (as if they seemingly had an unlimited supply). After being turned away, sans Popeyes Chicken Sandwich, many took to social media to document the obvious next step to this journey: making their way over to competitor Chick-Fil-A. One user states: “Went to Chick-Fil-A. Got a spicy chicken sandwich, waffle fries, and a drink in 5 minutes. We all know who’s winning this rivalry.”
This sentiment isn’t echoed by those who were lucky to have had the chance to try the Popeyes Chicken Sandwich. Served on a brioche-like bun with pickles and a special sauce, early reviewers have already pegged it as the king of chicken sandwiches, and with it currently sold out, this only propels its reputation into mythical status.
Some entrepreneurial people have tried to take advantage of the high demand for the sandwich, too. A post on social media showed two men with a bag of the chicken sandwiches walking around the street trying to resell them for a profit. No one bought them.
In a more positive story, a 17-year old man in Charlotte, North Carolina, took advantage of the long lines at Popeyes to help people register to vote while they waited. He handed out sample ballots and voter registration forms to people in line while urging them to head to the polls for the upcoming election.
In the meantime, Popeyes is promising to be gathering supplies and working to better prepare for the re-release of their chicken sandwich. For any and all chicken sandwich cravings until then, I’m sure Chick-Fil-A will welcome you with open arms.
