Harney Sushi Serves Sustainable Seafood
Harney Sushi is best known for their innovative sushi rolls, seafood plates, and “funk shui” environment. But did you know they also care about our ecosystem and our health? They care so much that since December of 2011 Harney Sushi has been serving only sustainable seafood.
We’ve probably heard that term, “sustainable” tossed around a lot lately, so to really understand the efforts Harney Sushi and other sustainable sushi locations are making let’s first define what sustainable seafood even means.
“Seafood that is harvested and/or produced in a manner that minimizes bycatch and impacts on surrounding ecosystems, while maintaining or creating economic viability for those who depend on the industry.” -Seafood for the Future
This means the fish we’ve grown to love and crave – Bluefin Tuna, Toro, Big Eye Tuna, Unagi, Octopus, Red Snapper, Hamachi, Maine Sea Urchin, and some Yellowfin have disappeared from Harney’s menu and will remain off the menu indefinitely. For some of us the fishes listed above were all we know and eat, so what do we order now?
It is time to get out of our comfort zone and explore other delicious seafood alternatives. Good thing Harney Sushi houses the best creative and innovative culinary talent in San Diego, because you will be offered a surprising amount of sushi choices with select fish that will soon, (hopefully soon) be regarded as not an alternative anymore, but the standard of available sushi.
We encourage you to visit Harney Sushi, immerse yourself into their sustainable menu, and taste the future of Seafood.
Harney Sushi is the first sustainable sushi restaurant in San Diego to join the nationwide movement and is making strides to create awareness and educate the public about more sustainable solutions to environmental concerns.
