Best of the Best: San Diego’s Delicious Donuts
You know it when you taste it. That perfectly balanced bite of soft dough and rightly proportioned frosting. It hits you. You’ve hit the donut jackpot. From the classic maple bar and old-fashioned donut, to the gluten free blueberry; donuts have made their way into the hearts of people all over America.
Donut Bar
You probably didn’t know you wanted a beer with your donut until you heard the combination mentioned out loud. Well no fret, this beer-loving town has got you covered. Head on over to the Donut Bar in Downtown every Friday and Saturday night and enjoy a craft pairing with your favorite donut. Don’t expect an ordinary donut experience, the Donut Bar features one-of-a-kind creations, like Mexican Hot Chocolate – topped with mini marshmallows, French Toast – with real maple syrup on top, and Birthday Cake Oreo – with actual Oreo’s stuffed inside. Raved about on the Ellen show and enjoyed recently by Wheel of Fortune’s Pat & Vanna, this place is not overrated.
Donut Panic
Grab a Boston Crème, Churro, Thai Tea Crème, or another one of Donut Panic’s fruity-filled donut holes. Located off the 5 and Mission Gorge, grab a donut and take a stroll around at Grantville Park, just minutes from the shop. Donut Panic has hopped on the lavender bandwagon, with their Lemon Lavender donut, beautifully sprinkled with lavender leaves on top.
Skinny-Donuts
Although we are pretty excited about the donut and beer combination we mentioned earlier, the classic coffee and donut combination is pretty hard to beat. Grab a cup of single-origin Ethiopia – Yirgacheffe Idido, and pair it with a vegan donut from the local small-batch distributor, Skinny-Donuts. Dip one of their Vanilla Crumb donuts into your latte, for your very own vanilla latte creation. Skinny-Donuts can be found at all Dark Horse Coffee Roasters locations.
Nomad Donuts
Try the globally inspired menu of Nomad Donuts, nuzzled between North Park, Normal Heights, and University Heights. This gourmet donut shop changes their menu every day, finding inspiration from around the world. Expect to find beautiful, artisanal designs, with bright colors, lightly dusted toppings, and a variety of rich fruit packed inside. Each donut is made with cage free, organic eggs, ingredients from local farmers markets, and with the local community in mind. To sum it all up: local ingredients with global flavors and an artisanal design.
Whether you are celebrating the start of another sun-filled morning, or surprising your office with a mid-week treat, you can’t go wrong with a donut. Cheers to another day of celebrating life!
