Wine and beer, in all their various forms are two of the most widely consumed adult beverages in the United States. Beer is the world’s oldest alcoholic beverage and has reigned supreme as America’s top choice for decades. Trends and tastes do change over time and beer was knocked off its pedestal for a short time.

Back in 2005 for the first time ever, wine eclipsed beer as the alcoholic beverage of choice among adult drinkers. According to the 2005 Gallup Research Poll on Consumption Habits, 39% of American drinkers preferred wine compared to 36% of drinkers who preferred beer. Wine manufactures took notice of this upward trend for wine consumption and responded with a plethora of choices for both the wine connoisseur as well as the novice.

However, beer drinkers don’t despair. The most recent poll does show that beer is strongly back on top with a 40% market share while wine is holding steady at 34%.
