If you’re looking to change things up and have a pleasant, proper time with some friends, check out an afternoon teatime in San Diego. Afternoon tea feels a little foreign to most Americans, but it’s a delightful tradition abroad that breaks up the day and offers a moment of pause and a break to take a refreshing breather. Whether you’re in it for the pomp and circumstance and plan on dressing to the nines, or if you’d like a more relaxing, laid back time with some friends, here’s a few places around San Diego that offer afternoon tea:

Shakespeare Corner Shoppe

Perhaps one of the most authentically British afternoon teas offered in San Diego, Shakespeare Corner Shoppe is a British family owned food and gift shop specializing in goods from the British and Emerald Isles. Selina, who hails from Surrey, England and her staff will make your afternoon as memorable as one could wish for. Using recipes and tips handed down to her by her beloved Grandma, Lucy, Selina stays true to an authentic English Afternoon Tea. Amazing scones made in her shoppe are topped of with imported Clotted Cream and jams.

During the weekends, the shoppe has two sittings: one at 12.30pm and the other at 3.30pm. Make reservations! Seats fill up fast.

Cafe Chloe

Cafe Chloe is a cozy, urban neighborhood cafe located in San Diego’s hip East Village which serves an award-winning menu of updated bistro classics alongside gourmet coffee, tea and boutique wines. Open all day, this jewel box of a cafe offers a variety of enjoyable experiences. Join the locals in our convivial, sunny dining room to linger over breakfast or lunch, then come for a candlelit dinner and watch the world go by from the charming sidewalk patio.

The Westgate Hotel 

Enjoy a respite from the ordinary at The Westgate’s Afternoon Tea. Relax to the melodious sounds of a harp while you indulge in a delightful array of delicious tea sandwiches, sweet pastries, scones and seasonal berries. Seatings for the traditional tea service are offered Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 2:30 until 5pm. Private teas can be arranged for your group. In addition to formal teas, champagne and wine are also available.

Aubrey Rose Tea Room

The Aubrey Rose Tea Room is one of San Diego’s finest. Traditional Afternoon Tea is served with elegance of fine food that is complemented by a superb choice of fine loose leaf teas from around the world. Nestled in the heart of the La Mesa Antiques district, The AubreyRose is full of ambiance and offers excellence of service that leaves guests with memories of a gentle and civilized experience. Simply described as “A two-hour mini-vacation” by tea room patrons.
