Blue Man Group comes to San Diego
They’re big, they’re bald, they’re blue and they’re coming to San Diego for six days only (Sept. 20-25). I am of course talking about the internationally-renowned theatre sensation trio known as Blue Man Group.
The Blue Man Group experience is hard to describe to anyone who has never seen the show. It features multi-media performances that feature three bald and blue characters who take the audience on a journey that is funny, intelligent and visually stunning. In lieu of spoken word, the group is accompanied by a live four-piece band, and also a newly-added LED curtain and high-resolution screen that enhances the audience’s visual experience.
Kalen Allmandinger, who has been performing for the Blue Man Group for over 10 years, describes it as a variety show that weaves in modern technology and music with iconic characters and imagery. “The [blue] man expresses aspects of every day life that most people can relate with,” he said.
Through his ten-year tenure with Blue Man Group, Allmandinger has traveled all around the world, including locations like London and Tokyo. However, this is the first theatrical production to tour North America, so the producers and performances added new visual effects and comedic bits to keep things fresh.
“You would think that it can get old, but you just have to keep it fresh even after doing it thousands of times,” Allmandinger said. “You must reinvent ways to trick yourself into the mindset of doing it for the first time every time. As a performer, you must challenge yourself to keep it real and have honest reactions.”
Currently, Blue Man Group theatrical shows can be seen in New York, Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas, Orlando, Berlin, Stockholm, Viena and Tokyo. No two performances are the same, however. The San Diego shows will feature classic Blue Man moments as well as brand new content.
“Our goal with this production, as with all of our productions, is to help audience members reconnect with their own sense of discovery, with their own sense of what is possible in their lives,” said Blue Man Group co-founder Philip Stanton in a press release.
Blue Man Group will stop at San Diego’s Civic Theatre (3rd and B Street, Downtown SD) Sept. 20 -25, as part of Broadway/San Diego’s 35th Anniversary season.
