Artist Spotlight: Billie Eilish
It must be humbling for the veteran artists of the music industry to hear an artist like Billie Eilish release music that is marked with such vocal talent and skill? Why is that? Eilish is only 16 years old, yet her music signifies that of someone with a deep maturity that is rarely seen at her age.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Billie Eilish comes from a family that is full of creative minded individuals. Her family is comprised of actors and musicians who served as a clear influence that fostered her artistic creativity from an early age. Home schooled along with her brother and now songwriting partner, Eilish joined the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus at age eight, where she was able to perfect his distinctive vocal abilities. By the age of eleven, Eilish and her brother, Finneas O’Connell, began to write and produce their own songs.
In 2015, the pair released several songs on their Soundcloud, titled “sHE’S brOKen” and “Fingers Crossed” for their friends to listen to, but by October of that year, it was clear that they were onto something big. In 2016, Eilish released her debut single, titled “Ocean Eyes” and it became an instant viral hit. A music video closely followed, and the song was subsequently remixed by a number of big name artists, including Blackbear.
By this time, Eilish was accumulating a respectable amount of attention within the music industry. Her next single, “Bellyache” premiered to critical acclaim, and featured a video directed by Miles and AJ that was released in March of 2017. In August later that year, her debut EP, titled “Don’t Smile At Me” were released.
Her music is marked with an ominous mood that deftly weaves through mature subject matter with a fierce intelligence and cheeky humor to balance it out. Her voice is reminiscent of Lana Del Rey, yet with a more ethereal quality to it that is hands down haunting in the best way possible. It’s clear that this young artist has already found her signature sound with a promising career ahead of her.
