Museum Month in San Diego ends Sunday
Have you ever bookmarked a museum in your head and vowed to visit someday? With so many to see in San Diego, it’s all too common to put off a visit to the Museum of Contemporary Art or the Natural History Museum because you are too busy (plus, there’s always next weekend).
Living in such a diverse city with so much to offer often shields us from the “San-Diego” experience (exactly what do all those tourists come to see?). Yes, we can go to the beach any day of the week and enjoy authentic Mexican food, but being a tourist in our own city? The horror!
However, a good deal is always appealing, and during the month of February, you can pick up a free museum pass at any participating Macy’s store and finally go on that museum visit you’ve been putting off.
The word “museum” often brings a feeling of dread– but by no means do you have to relive that bored-to-tears experience. In this day and age, the term “museum” in San Diego doesn’t just imply art (although those are worth a visit too); it also incorporates the Maritime Museum, Ruben H. Fleet Science Center, Birch Aquarium at Scripps, the SD Botanical Gardens, and the USS Midway, just to name a few. The best part? They are all participating in San Diego Museum Month 2010.
This year’s Museum Month marks the 21st year of the program established by the San Diego Museum Council, which was originally established to promote the awareness of the many museums and historical sites that San Diego has to offer. Visitors with the Museum Month Pass receive half off regular admission prices at the 39 participating locations. Even better, the pass is valid for the holder and up to 3 guests. Last year the pass was used by over 19,000 visitors.
Never mind going to the movies this rainy Saturday, substitute some cultural enrichment. In an era where going to the movies with your family can put a big fat hole in your wallet, museum-going is a nice alternative to consider. If this sounds appealing, take advantage of this soon, Museum Month ends this Sunday.
For information on where to pick up a museum pass and a full list of participating museums, visit the San Diego Museum Council website.
