Our very own Oceanside is featured in the Hollywood movie To Save a Life, a new feature length film released last Friday by Samuel Goldwyn Films. The screenplay was written by Jim Britts, youth pastor of New Song Community Church in Oceanside. This is definitely a film all San Diegans should see.

But there is a deeper message that seasoned youth worker and writer Jim Britts wanted to inspire in the audience. Through this local indie film, producers hope to empower teens to reach out to troubled peers, helping to speak against teen violence and give hope to those contemplating suicide.

To Save a Life is the story of Jake Taylor, an all-American teen who “has it all.” His world is suddenly turned upside down after a childhood friend commits suicide. Jake is forced to make decisions that could change his world forever.

“The film is about making unexpected choices and sacrifices, while having the courage and determination to persevere against all odds,” said Peter Goldwyn, Vice President of Acquisitions.

The production of To Save a Life was a true community effort—over 80% of the cast and crew consisted of Oceanside and North County locals.  Several Oceanside locations, including Oceanside High School, Mira Costa College, New Song Community Church, Eternal Hills Memorial Park, Harbor, and Beach can be seen throughout the film. Community members Debra Allen of Eternal Hills Memorial Park, Lisa Frost of Amazeinc Internet Solutions and Steve Statzer of Sagepoint Advisors, Inc. also participated in the movie project.

To Save a Life used some Hollywood talent as well, with director Brian Baugh (An American Carol, Jack and the Beanstalk), actors Randy Wayne (Grizzly Park, Frat Party), Deja Kreutzberg (Law and order, CSI Miami), Kim Hidalgo (The New Adventures of Old Christine), and Sean Michael Afable (Akeela and the Bee). The film also features brand new music from Switchfoot, the popular San Diego based band.

Opening weekend of To Save a Life was a success—with a turnout of over 215,000 teens. Although the indie film had no television advertising, the local film gained the #1 fan rating Monday on Fandango.com and Flixter.com.

You can see the inspiring story as well as familiar places and faces at a theater near you. To Save a Life is playing in over 100 theaters around the country. To search show times and theaters click here.

Go Jim Britts, the New Song Community Church, and the North County community for reaching out to teens and putting our very own San Diego County on the big screen.
